Gordon left for New York in 1945 while steadily releasing recordings under his own name he recorded with Charlie Parker and had famous sax duels with Wardell Gray.
By 1962, Gordon was in Europe where he would stay for 15 years playing with numerous well-known musicians of his time, signing with Blue Note and Prestige records.
Dexter Gordon returned to the U.S. in 1976 where he received a warm welcome at New York’s “Village Vanguard”and released several more albums.

Well known for his tall stature, Dexter Gordon was a Los Angeles tenor sax player who contributed to the early development of bebop style jazz.
He started his career in 1940 playing sax for Lionel Hampton, then by 1943 he started making his own recordings while playing among bands with many famous musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Fletcher Henderson and Billy Eckstine.
