Zim Ngqawana

December 25, 1959 – May 10, 2011

Zim Ngqawana (December 25, 1959 – May 10, 2011) was a South African flautist and saxophonist.

“Music is still there when the sun goes down. It provides energy for a spiritually depleted universe.” – Zim Ngqawana

Ngqawana picked up the flute at 21 late to begin studies in music, but he quickly made up for lost time.The University of Massachusetts gave him a scholarship which gave him the opportunity to to study with musicians Archie Shepp and Yusef Lateef.

He returned to South Africa in the 90s and worked with South African jazz musicians Hugh Masekela and Abdullah Ibrahim. He formed his own band ‘Ingoma’ which toured the US in 1995.
