During his career, pianist Benny Green has at various times paid tribute to Bobby Timmons, McCoy Tyner, and a variety of other top pianists of the 1950s and ‘60s, all while still sounding like himself.

On this performance from Feb. 15, 2011, Green interprets “Monk’s Dream,” hinting strongly in spots at its composer Thelonious Monk but without directly copying him or watering down his own musical personality.

While (like Monk) always keeping the melody in mind, Benny Green comes up with a concise and fresh version of the classic song.
