Brace yourself: This masterpiece is cut short at 9:57 and try as we might we could not find a Part Two.

It’s painful – as you will see and hear – but sometimes a fragment is all we get.

Memphis-born Coleman is one of the great masters of the tenor. Miles knew. Coleman was the artist he reached out to when Coltrane left the band. Herbie Hancock had him on board for Maiden Voyage.

A major force in jazz education, Coleman’s been a consultant and teacher at the New School University, Long Island University, New York University and Mannes School of Music, and has conducted workshops, seminars and master classes at universities all over the U.S.
