Emmet Cohen’s weekly podcasts, which were born during the pandemic, continue most weeks into the present time, teaming his trio with guest artists.
For this 2024 performance, the pianist is joined by bassist Philip Norris, drummer Joe Farnsworth, trumpeter Brian Lynch, and tenor-saxophonist Craig Handy.
The rendition begins with a ballad treatment of “My Old Flame” as Lynch takes most of the melody and Handy supplies a warm yet adventurous statement.
The tempo doubles for the trumpet solo, reverts to being a ballad at first during Cohen’s spot on piano and then cooks a bit.
Things get a bit crazy from then on with Lynch re-entering; there are witty cadenzas by the two horns which bring the unpredictable performance to a close.
