Michigan native Ron Carter started off playing cello. But as a child faced with stereotypes of classical musicians as white he moved to the bass.

Carter’s first recordings were with bandleader and sax player Eric Dolphy. But what first made him famous were his contributions to the Miles Davis Quintet, in which he played with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock.

An academic, he has taught music at Juilliard and City College of New York.

Personnel:

Ron Carter, bass
Jacky Terrasson, piano
Russell Malone, guitar
