Someone To Watch Over Me – 1965

Ben Webster

A beautiful ballad statement

Ben Webster (1909-1973) always had his own sound and style on the tenor.

Webster, who was usually rather raspy and fiery on uptempo tunes, could purr like a pussycat on ballads.

The latter quality is heard throughout this tender version of “Someone To Watch Over Me,” performed before a private audience at the legendary Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen on January 21, 1965.

Webster, who had recently moved to Europe, is joined by pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, and drummer Ole Streenberg.
