David Brubeck was born December 6, 1920 in the San Francisco Bay Area city of Concord, California. He grew up in Ione on his father Peter Brubeck’s cattle ranch. His mother Elizabeth who had studied piano in England with the intent of becoming a concert pianist, taught piano for extra money.
