John Clayton is a notable bassist, arranger, composer, and bandleader (the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra) based in Southern California.

His son Gerald Clayton has developed into a major jazz pianist, one with plenty of accomplishments of his own.

At a concert at SF Jazz on May 20, 2021, they performed bassist Paul Chambers’ “Tale Of The Fingers” as a duet.

The piece was originally recorded in 1956 by Chambers, pianist Horace Silver, and drummer Philly Joe Jones, and then largely forgotten afterwards, not getting its second recording until 2000.

“Tale Of The Fingers” deserves the rare revival and is given a cooking rendition by the father and son duo.
