Guitarist Russell Malone first came to fame working with Harry Connick Jr. and Diana Krall but he has been an important solo artist for the past 30 years.

Malone’s straight ahead jazz style is in the tradition of Wes Montgomery and early George Benson but in his own voice; his solos are filled with his vast knowledge of jazz history.

On this performance, he joins pianist Billy Taylor and Taylor’s trio with bassist Chip Jackson and drummer Winard Harper for a hard-swinging performance of “I’ll Never Be Another You.”

Their version starts out strong with Malone’s solo, picks up momentum as Taylor digs in during his spot, and has a fine tradeoff between the two giants.

While they sound as if they played together often, Russell Malone and Billy Taylor otherwise never made a joint recording.
