Celebrating the life of Abbey Lincoln

From “Painted Lady,” 1980

Chicago native Abbey Lincoln’s career was tied to civil rights activism, as well as to that of her one-time spouse, drumming great Max Roach. As a singer-songwriter, her lyrics often commented on the state of minority rights in the United States; she appeared on Roach’s activist-themed album, from 1960, “We Insist!”
