Throughout his career, Herbie Hancock has often gone back and forth between playing acoustic jazz and electronic explorations, from relatively straight ahead jazz to funk and pop, while always sounding like himself.

On this 2021 performance on International Jazz Day, Hancock sticks to acoustic piano in a quartet with flutist Hubert Laws, bassist Ben Williams, and drummer Justin Tyson, paying tribute to the recently deceased Chick Corea in their version of “Windows.”

Laws was on the original recording with Corea 55 years earlier, and Hancock was a longtime friend, playing duets with Corea during a few different periods of their careers.

Their heartfelt rendition of “Windows” lets one know that, although Chick Corea is gone, his music will live on forever.
