You Stepped Out of a Dream

Jim Hall and Barney Kessel

Associated with Lana Turner but never sung by her

Written and published in 1940 by Naco Herb Brown, “You Stepped Out of a Dream” has since become a jazz standard. The song became associated in the ’40s with silver screen leading lady Lana Turner after Tony Martin sang it in “Ziegfried Girl.”

Covers have been done by Oscar Peterson, Joe Pass, Ella Fitzgerald, Gary Burton, Max Roach, Sonny Rollins, Cedar Walton, Sarah Vaughan, McCoy Tyner, Archie Shepp, George Shearing and Nat King Cole.
