The Japanese altoist has had a dual musical career.

He had success in the U.S. with pop-inspired lite jazz albums, but at heart he is a classic bebopper whose tone can sound very close to that of Charlie Parker.

At a 1991 performance with guitarist Perry Hughes, organist Ronny Foster, and drummer Harvey Mason, the latter Watanabe is featured.

Sadao Watanabe’s playing is quite boppish, guitarist Hughes (who has spent much of his career based in Michigan) is impressive, and Foster’s organ helps the standard sound a bit fresh.
