A rare performance from the Ed Sullivan Show

The Dave Brubeck Quartet appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show on a few occasions.

This particular appearance is somewhat unique for, after Brubeck plays a few bars of “Blue Rondo A La Turk,” Brubeck and Ed Sullivan engage in a humorous dialogue about the difficult music.

The pianist agrees to play something that even a “square” like Sullivan could enjoy, and then he launches into a version of “I’m In A Dancing Mood” that, despite having a strong melody, is actually at least as complex as “Blue Rondo A La Turk.”

Brubeck is joined by bassist Eugene Wright, drummer Joe Morello, and (briefly) altoist Paul Desmond.
