Ronnie Burrage is best known as a veteran drummer but on this exuberant version of “Straight No Chaser” from Jan. 30, 2016, he also sings a bit.

Burrage actually was in the St. Louis Cathedral boys choir when he was a child and performed with Duke Ellington when he was just nine.

However it was as a drummer that he made his mark, freelancing in St. Louis until he moved to New York at 17.

Since then he has worked with many adventurous musicians including Lester Bowie, Arthur Blythe, Andrew Hill, Jackie McLean, McCoy Tyner, Woody Shaw, Billy Bang, Sonny Fortune, and Courtney Pine among many others.

The Ronnie Burrage Quartet is featured on a swinging yet relaxed version of “Straight No Chaser” with Archie Shepp on tenor.
