Louis Armstrong first recorded “Struttin’ With Some Barbeque,” which is credited to his second wife Lil Harden Armstrong, in 1927.
He kept it in his repertoire for 40 years and, while his playing was somewhat set by the 1950s, it never failed to be exciting.
This version is a little bit unusual for drummer Barrett Deems is quite explosive from the start, playing double-time rhythms during the first part of the song.
Although this is a shorter version than usual due to being on the Ed Sullivan Show, there are spots for all of the musicians which include trombonist Trummy Young, clarinetist Edmond Hall, pianist Billy Kyle, bassist Squire Gersh, Deems, and of course Armstrong who is in typically exuberant form.
