While somewhat neglected by the major modern jazz publications, hot jazz (whether called Dixieland, small group swing or classic jazz) has long been flourishing if a bit underground.

This all-star group from 2011 has some of the top talent around today along with the late clarinetist Kim Cusack who passed away in 2023.

Led by drummer Hal Smith, the group also includes trumpeter Bria Skonberg, trombonist Clint Baker (who also plays many other instruments), clarinetist Anita Thomas, Cusack on clarinet and tenor, pianist Carl Sonny Leyland, rhythm guitarist Katie Cavera, and bassist Ryan Gould.

During a rousing version of “There’ll Be Some Changes Made” (which includes a pair of choruses shared by the two clarinetists), every musician other than Cavera has an opportunity to solo with Skonberg driving the ensembles.
