Mike Casey is an altoist who believes in taking his time in his playing.
He graduated from the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz, has worked in New York with many different artists (including Brandee Younger and Marc Cary), and has led several albums of his own.
On his rendition of “Unforgettable,” a romantic piece made famous by Nat King Cole, Casey is joined by bassist Matt Dwonszuk and drummer Corey Garcia.
Their rendition is taken slowly, with Casey sticking close to the melody. Dwonszuk delivers a fine solo, and the piece is modernized and reharmonized a bit, creating a more melancholic atmosphere than one would expect.
