Lionel Hampton (1908-2002) always brought along a lot of joy and happiness whenever he played.

86 at the time of this 1994 film clip, he is featured on “Hamp’s Boogie-Woogie” in Munich, Germany with a rhythm section that includes pianist Junior Mance (who takes a fine solo) and the St. Petersburg State Orchestra.

Hampton, who in addition to his vibraphone playing does a bit of call and response singing when the piece becomes “Hey-Ba-Ba-Re-Bop,” makes everyone smile during the rousing performance.
