The innovative guitarist John McLaughlin has had a very productive and wide ranging career that included the pacesetter rockish fusion band the Mahavishnu Orchestra, the blend of jazz with Indian classical music in Shakti, more conventional forms of jazz, and music that cannot be classified.
At the International Jazz Day concert in Istanbul, Turkey in 2013, he performed with a trio that also included the masterful violinist Jean-Luc Ponty (who was in the second version of the Mahavishnu Orchestra) and Zakir Hussain (a member of Shakti) on tabla.
McLaughlin mostly plays a supportive role on his composition “Lotus Feet” with Ponty and the interplay between Ponty and Hussain taking honors.
